NRA-ILA | California: Legislation to Ban Gun Shows on State Property Reintroduced

This week, more legislation was introduced by anti-gun legislators. SB 915, seeking to ban gun shows on state property and AB 1869, to increase penalties on unserialized firearms.

Senate Bill 915, similar to last year’s Senate Bill 264 before it was heavily amended to only the OC Fairgrounds, bans county and state officers, employees, operators, lessees or licensees from entering into any agreement to allow for the sale of any firearm, firearm parts, or ammunition on property that is owned, leased, occupied or operated by the state or county. This imposes a one-size-fits-all restriction upon all jurisdictions in the whole state, to prevent them from deciding how to use their venues. In addition, this prevents tax-paying businesses from renting taxpayer-funded venues for lawful activities.

Assembly Bill 1869 increases the penalties for those in possession of unserialized firearms from a misdemeanor to a felony.  This legislation fails to contemplate the many existing firearms manufactured before 1968 that are not required to be serialized. A violation would result in the loss of an individual’s Second Amendment rights for an otherwise lawfully owned and possessed firearm.
