I've found that while a bore snake comes out perfectly clean, a cleaning patch with CLP of the correct size pulled through the same barrel will come out with a bunch of fouling. I don't think bore snakes work all that well, but they are convenient I guess.

You should visually check that the chamber is empty, not just pull the charging handle 3 times and call it good.
