7.5 inch 300AAC is the correct answer
I owe, an mark 18 sbr, an 11.3, 12.5, 13.7 pin and weld, and 16 inch rifles I run them all, most people will never be able to justify shooting out past 25 meters as self defense, shtf okay maybe, I say train and master your guns don't Matter the length
Power of a 5.56 is not as good as several pistol rounds once you shorter the barrel to 10 to 16 inches. Keep in mind the bullet was designed to be effective when going fast. Slow it down and it is just a slow tiny bullet. 300 Blackout, or a 450 will perform better out of a short barrel. At close range I would use a 10 mm pistol over a short barrel 5.56. Ballistics don't lie.

Due to the lovely infringements in my state, the shortest I can go is 12.5ish anyway (non-nfa "other" firearm >26in oal) at least I can get a taste of the shorty game until I move to a free state

Whats the point or is it paranoia i have a adequate amount of weapons and reloading supplies and equipment my preferred is a 1990's sig p229 in 9mm 18 rounder yes 18rds. Next would be sar k245 14 rds and last ria mapp r9 hsms tcmr9 . Game over.

Not loosing the velocity of the 556 still able to hit 500 yards with that length, the best sbr length is 11.5

I love my Iwi Zion ar pistol. That’s my go to home defense and do it all ar pistol. I love me some iwi guns. My iwi galil ace gen2 might be my favorite gun I have. I just need the iwi tavor for the trifecta
Tavor is the best of both worlds: 16.5" barrel with the overall length less than the Mk 18.
Honestly, if you had to have one AR only, 16" is probably the best and most versatile.

14.5 for me is good enough. Though a friend said you can pin and weld a 13.7 or maybe he said 13.9 , either way its legal rifle length and the velocity.
Size does matter.
M193 best with 20" barrels
M855 best with 14.5" barrels
MK262 best with 18" barrels
These are where the cartridge has their most potential.
10.3" barrels just lose velocity and accuracy over 100-150 yards and you start to get tumbling.

There's no point in having a 10 inch (or around there) .223/.556. At that point you need to start looking at 300 Blackout. Just makes sense. Eeeeend of story!
