Our man on the new products scene, Paul Levy, is back to show us the FM-9 9mm AR-15 Build Kit from Foxtrot Mike (aka FM Products). The folks at Foxtrot Mike have made building a pistol caliber AR super easy by putting ALL of the caliber-specific components in this kit. You then finish the build with your choice of upper, pistol grip, handguard, stock or brace, and other off-the-shelf AR-15 components. The kit contains a semi-stripped lower receiver, barrel, bolt assembly (technically not a “bolt carrier group” because it’s a one-piece component), buffer, and recoil spring. No need to do a lot of research tracking down the correct-weight buffer or making sure you get a bolt that will work with the lower! Forget about a magwell adapter, too, because the FM lower uses readily available Glock® magazines, and it has a robust, reliable bolt-hold-open mechanism. Foxtrot Mike pistol caliber build kits are available in both 9mm and .45 ACP, in a variety of popular barrel lengths.

  1. Foxtrot mike products I have been using for a couple years now. Good quality, very reasonably priced and surprisingly accurate. The uppers they make are awesome with the forward charging handle.

  2. I have the fm bolt in my fm 9mm lower and fm upper. I had tolerance stack issues with the flat surface where the charging handle meets the bolt. The charging handle would sometimes slip up the angled surfaces and wedges between the bolt and upper which made it pretty hard to operate. I tried the strike industries and also a generic oem charging handle. All with the same problem. I ended up unscrewing the upper charging handle portion of the bolt and laser welded a 1,5mm higer flat area to this part. After that i milled it to flat surfaces.
Now it works flawless but it was a complicated job to do.

I also have 3 dents on the thin edge near the feed ramp where i had some stuck rounds during competition which were caused by stuck rounds. This malfunctions was caused by me doing stupid things. It does not make any problems, but it also does not look very nice.

Also the solid firing pin retainer pin broke on mine. I had to replace it with a standard cotter pin.
Some parts of the broken retainer pin got into the firing pin channel and blocked my firing pin from firing. I had to hammer the firing pin out from the breech face with a punch to free him and remove the broken parts.

  3. I had the fm buffer in the fm lower installed. For my taste this buffer is way too heavy. It is also a solid one. It slams into the breech face like crazy. I did not like that and changed it to a colt type pattern one from rock river arms which also has an anti bounce feature included. This one works much better in my opinion.
Make sure to limit the travel of a different buffer to the longer lenght of the fm buffer. So that you do not get a broken bolt hold open because the shorter bolt has more speed on the last round.
I made a plug on the lathe but you can also use some coins to limit the travel.

  4. I have the exact fm lower. The fitting between my milspec upper is very loose (but works with wobble). But they include a tension screw in the back. It runs my glock oem short and long mags flawless. Also the magpul ones. Only on the kci long stick mags the bolt catch does not work. What realy bothers me is the flat mag release button. I milled serrations in mine because i realy hated that and had problems during competition.
