Testing Optics on AR15 Platforms

This is just a crude test of various AR15 optic options at close and medium range. Targets are at about 5, 10, and 15 yards. Steel targets are at 150 and 190 yards. Left out of this test is the ACOG but iron sights, EOTech (with and without magnifier), fixed power optic, and low variable power optics are represented.

  1. How windy was it? Shooting unsupported at 150 yards shouldn't be all that difficult with optics (i have shit eyes so irons are tough for me lol)

Wouldn't be a bad comparison (though expensive) to run a acog/rmr or a offset. I've been running a 3x acog and a offset primary arms micro with some pretty good results.

  2. Not sure if you covered it completely but Im having a lot of problems when I zero my rifle for hunting. I zero at 25 then 100 or just 100 but if im hunting & the target is closer then 100 I always miss unless I have a mil-dot or hash scope..I want a new scope but cant afford or don't like the new mil dots..any way I can compensate for my shooting & save some cash getting a Nikon BDC?

  3. Fun to watch but it says more about the shooters than the optics. Aimpoint is good out to 300 yards on man size targets, no magnification required. Bad AR triggers are probably the biggest problem for the 100 and 200 yard shots.

  4. Cool. I'll look into it. I looked at the CMR like on Doc's AR and liked it the best as far as the variable powered optics go. I love the EOTech and ACOG but it would be nice to have a variable power that can almost get the best of both worlds.

  5. No its not heavy at all in my opinion. That was one selling factor me. Also length. It was shorter than others that offered long eye relief. I don't like to be too long in this category on a rifle. It works well on the 308 and should perform even better on AR platform as well. I think I paid 60 bucks for it. I have beat the hell out of it and it stays put and holds zero. Decent optic for the money that allows cross hair point at short and internmediate range.

  6. Nice rig. Is it heavy? I'll take a look at that Bushnell too. I like the idea of low, variable power because of the versatility but I really need a long eye relief if I'm going to be slapping it on my primary carbine. I don't want to have to fight vignette and I want to be able to shoot out of form fairly easily. I've been going back and forth on optic options for my AR and I just can't decide. Thanks and take care.

  7. ghillie. I missed this vid in my email but made sure I went back to view. I like what you guys are doing. Very practical. I have a CETME that is topped with a Bushnell 1.5-4.5 33 mm optic. I looked at tons of options. For me the low power variables provided the best ALL around use. You can get very quick with 4 inch eye relief at 200. I have no problem with two eye approach on 2x power at 100 and beyond. Anything further than that…I am in super sonic observation and sneak mode anyway.

  8. I think next time we may need to each rotate through the systems and have every one shoot each system to test the capabilities of each and definitely through in a acog. It was fun Anyway though.
