This is an unboxing video and short review of the new 2014 Daniel Defense DDM4V9LW 5.56 AR (LW stands for Light weight)
In the case is:
– a Magpul PMAG Gen M2 (not the Gen M3) 30 round magazine.
– instruction manual the shows last year’s M4 rifle with the older stock.
– option stock recoil pad that you can swap-out with the other pad, depending on your preference and what fits better against your shoulder.
– and of course, the Daniel Defense DDM4 V9LW rifle.
The rifle is shipped within in a plastic bag. Some of the visible new features on
this year’s version are the Glass Filled Polymer buttstock, pistol grip, and verical forgrip with the “Soft Touch” Overmolding.
As I mentioned this is Daniel Defense’s light weight version. This model, as you see it is a very manageable 6.34lbs.
In regards to the case, it is somewhat of a lightweight plastic case, with ample foam padding and locking provision. It’s is fine for taking the rifle to the range or for storage. The 4 retaining clips on the front insure the rifle stays secure.
This is the Daniel Defense newset generation Lite Rail III system.
The improved design enhances the rail’s structural integrity and is one of
the lightest rail systems on the market.
It comes with (3) Santoprene rail ladder to improve grip and provide protection to the rail.
This rail requires only 4 bolts instead of 6.
It has Front and Rear Sling Swivel Attachment Points integrated into both the left and right side of the rails.
The QD swivel attachment points are designed to limit the swivel’s rotation to preventing twists and tangles when using a sling. If you look closely you’ll see that the swivel channel is not cut 360 degrees.
This “Free Floating” rail is made of Aircraft Grade aluminum.
Daniel Defense also flared the magazine well. The funneled and widened magwell makes for a faster and more secure magazine change.
The pistol grip has a removeable compartment on the bottom where you can store batteries, or other small items if you want. It also has the “Soft Touch” Overmolding.
The charging handle is also made of lightweight aluminum.
This is Daniel Defense’s vertical forgrip with matching rubberized overmolding. It also has a storage compartment on the bottom for a battery or two. You can easily remove the forgrip if you don’t want to use it.
There also another another QD swivel sling mounting hold at the rear receiver extension and the left AND right side of the buttstock.
And in case you’re wondering…If you’re not a fan of the new-look buttstock (which personally I DO like) you can easily swap it out with another buttstock. For this model rifle, Make sure you get the MIL-SPEC buttstock – not the Commercial spec version. Only the Mil-Spec version will fit.
Here I’m using a Magpul CTR Mil-spec buttstock.

The new Daniel Defense M4 Carbine, V9 Lightweight is approximately five ounces lighter than the standard V9. It’s designed to satisfy the needs of modern shooters not only in popular shooting sports but also for tactical and defensive applications. The long, 15” DDM4 quad rail over a 16” cold hammer forged Light Weight profile barrel gives the operator the option to have the support hand extended out close to the muzzle allowing them to drive the gun more precisely, and preventing over travel when transitioning between multiple targets. This combined with our mid-length gas system which is known to have a smoother recoil impulse allows for quick but precise rapid fire. The longer rail also affords the shooter plenty of real estate for optics and accessories and allows for maximum sight radius for accurate shooting with rail mounted iron sights. This rifle also comes with the newly designed, rugged and comfortable Daniel Defense Buttstock and Pistol Grip.
all I can hear is the 80's porn music in the background
Way over priced. For what you get
I have that rail on my Colt M4 Carbine. I've had it for about 4 years and just busted some steel with it earlier this week. I love the LITE 3 rail in 15", it has lots of real estate for any of you attachment needs.
I just GOTTA make my next rifle purchase a Daniel Defense.
Is the flash hider welded or pinned on? And what are the thread measurements?
bcm or dd?
i'm not sure what model DD to get, can you help me decide?
doesn't the gap between the rail and the upper bother you?
I'm having troubles sliding off the DD stock. I must be doing something wrong…
why would you down grade your ar with magpul stuff ? i got daniel defense furniture in my ar 15 and its times better than magpul . i guess we all have different likes
I totally want to get one of these! I don't know if I'm able to have something like this in NYC but if those burglars come back, I want to be ready this time. I love that it's light weight and made of aircraft grade material. Thanks for showing this! Love and light honey!
I don't get why there aren't more videos of this rifle on YouTube. Same with the M4a1. There's only a handful of videos of both of them. Makes no sense.
How much lighter is it compared to the standard? Congrats on the awesome buy!
mine did not make it through 1 mag. had ftf, fte, etc. total mess. it is back to daniel defense for warranty work.
I have the same one. if your looking for lightweight and durability that never fails. this is what you need. spend the little extra cash and buy the best.
love it drop music distracting its like when they play the organ at church when the preacher is teaching
no brass hitting pavement?
What you buy the ar from ???
Awesome review. Exactly what I've been looking for in a review of this rifle. Gotta find one in the tornado grey now.
Looking at getting a DDM4 v5 myself and just cannot decide whether to go LW or not. How does the LW hold up for you? The LGS can get a Magpul v5LW in for me for 1200 or I can order a DD Furniture one for 1400 LW or Standard.
Thank you for the excellent closer views and all the nice narratives. I got one of the tornado color ones. I found a brownish one last week and was going to get that one. I then saw inventory count of one local for the Grey one and went right and got it. Shoots lawless.
When I save up a few bucks this is what I want next, I have DD M4A1 MILSPEC+ but want to try out the light weight.
Pretty nice looking rifle! Thanks for the overview.
