of course we don't want people to use AR 15 to hurt other people, but when the circumstances are right (a crazy person who wants to end his life) with access to this kind of weapons, people do use AR 15 to not just hurt, but to kill others. AR 15 seems to be mass murderers' favorite.

Where I come from we don't have to carry guns to protect our families or protect ourselves, because guns aren't available for any lunatic or psychopath to purchase and use. Having firearms circulating in the society doesn't make you feel safe – that's why you always want to carry one yourself. But absence of guns altogether will make it much more safer!
Figure out the real problem and try to address that.
