But but but…what if I have to shoot thru cinder blocks, an oven and 2 walls to incapacitate my attacker??? 😉
The M-855 62 Grain Penetrator, was hopefully going to penetrate Soviet Body Armor or their Helmet at 300 yards. It was (in fact) designed for the SAW and when they shortened the barrels of M-16s to make an M-4 they increased the twist rate for optimal 62 gr stabilization.. You can't fix stupid.
I agree. This is why I just shook my head when my dept. Issued it with the rifles. M855 is a decent round for fighting a conventional conflict against a standing army. The enemy is likely to be wearing some kind of load bearing equipment on their torso such as mags. The M855 is pretty good at defeating those mild barriers like that and still delivering a lethal wound. But as stated here, it is one of the worst rounds as a civilian or LEO .
True. Never understood the point of green tips. Seems its only talent is over penetration. Used them in Afghanistan. Which is weird because I personally have not met any hadjis running around in any body armor.
5,000 round of other ammo and one box of the green tip. Guess I will load up and poke tinny holes in one of my range targets. Thank's James.
Home defense rounds in my AR15 is Hornady critical defense.
I'm landing headshots homie, just like in PUBG.
James just wants all the green tip to himself. Hog hunters like green tip, I hear.
I got my Colt ar15 loaded with Tula 55 gr hp and I use to think that was the worst ammo also people would say it would not shoot accurately because it has a 1/7 twist barrel but it actually shoots real good in it with out a problem.
Exclusively use M193 in my long guns and MK262 in my MK18 for home defense. I'd love to see some mk262 shot out of a short barrel to see if it's as good as I've heard.
Thanks for putting this out there. I have been trying to tell people this for a while. Some people want it for "punching through barriers". Other than old Russian armor, a bonded soft point will more reliably go through the common barriers that will be encountered, ie. Windshield, car door, dry wall, etc.
You're a fucking Moron, green tip has its place as does hollow point. You said it wasn't a penetrator then go ahead and say it does penetrate and continue through to penetrate the next person. How is that not effective? "2 fer ammo"
Now it definitely isn't the most accurate but it definitely isn't the WORST ammo for and AR-15. The worst is anything that your AR won't eat!
Another thing since you're talking about incapacitate. Shot placement is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. I can incapacitate you with a friggin BB in the eye! Think before you do a video next time
Dropping knowledge bombs!
A friend of mine hit a dude with a burst of 855 from his SAW in Afghanistan they found him 3 days later on the Pakistan border (he said it was like 60 miles away over mountains)
Agree. Great post. Light, fast 55gr black box for me. Devastating. Only advantage to green tip I can see is use against specific types of modern body armor (see Mr guns n gear tests on IIIA recently… and others) and SOME relatively light barrier material (see Way of the Gun re: 55gr pokes holes in AR500 where green tip bounces off).
So you swapped from recommending fmj to hollow points for carry pistols?
I agree
For personal defense I like the 64gr Speer Gold Dot .223
What's not a bad choice…. Well that'd be 7.62x51mm NATO 147gr FMJ it does a GOOD deal of damage to anything it hits! Also the good old fashion .308 Federal 150gr soft point is quite a bit of a Whopper to any living animal.
Oh yah… well I shot all the 5.56 variants through Cheetos bags and found the green tip to be the very best with maximum expansion and incapacitation. Trust your "gel tests" all you want, I know the truth.
If you sight in with green tip for training/rangetime you have to re-zero your rifle with your defensive ammo.
do you think it would also effect the components wearing out quicker as well?
What 5.56-62+ grain product would you recommend then? This is somthing I would love more in depth in.
Anyone don't want their green tip ammo… I'll accept donations 😜👍
Well thank goodness he didn’t say the Russian stuff. I have a case of that
Good food for thought.
I have a bunch of fairly old 855 kicking around somewhere. I guess I'd better burn it up for target ammo and make sure none of it is in any of my 'go-time' magazines. I have no emotional attachment to it…I think I just bought it because it was cheap and was 'mil spec' or some such feeble reasoning 😉
PS. strictly speaking, 855 doesn't have a 'steel core' (like certain real AP rounds). It has a conical steel tip under the jacket. Some refer to it as "Light Armor Piercing" LAP.
What do you think of the new hornady critical defense .223?
I agree. Not to mention that the round is not that accurate either. I shoot 55gr fmj for training/practice. I also have it in my defense rifles. I was running 60gr soft points for a bit but eventually just stuck with 55gr.
But, but that is what the Army uses. It must be the best, right?!
Id say the worst ammo is gun show reloads. not only do they jam you gun, but you have to mortar it on the ground to get the damn thing unstuck. at least m855 goes bang lol
Is green tip still standard for the military? I heard about the M855A1 ammo but I feel bad for guys stuck with green tip if they are
**Lead core**, small steel tip. Test it in gelatin, PLEASE; works just fine! Why thes disinfo James???? I've tested it: Fragments just fine.
The kind you don't shoot
Green tip isn't accepted at any range with a steel backstop either, or ranges with steel targets. It's just the worst of every world possible save cost, and even then you can usually get 55 grain ammo cheaper.
You'll never hear an AK man talk about the worst ammo for ak
Thank you, I have green tip just because it was on sale and I just use it for training. But nice to know because I do like ammo somewhat capable even for training rounds.
I do carry one mag full of it though just in case I need to get through something lol
I understand the premise of the vid, but wouldn't three or five rounds of green tip into a target give you some time ?
Cool. I always thought it was a tungsten core. I've never shot it anyway because it's too expensive. I'm a fan of the 55 grain ball wolf gold. Its shot flawlessly for 8000 rounds in my AR.
Even worse ammo are the reloads i bought.
Dented cases, projectiles falling out of cases, random finished length, cockeyed primers.
Never again!
Not to mention it's not too accurate either .🍻
