  1. If am not mistaken this is the gen 1 GIBBZ Side Charge Upper with the small detent for the handle. In the last minute of the video the bolt did reciprocate just a little bit. Gen 2 handle detents have remedied the issue to my knowledge.

  2. Actually the original ArmaLite ar15 the charging handle was under the carrying handle ON TOP. It was only changed when they sold the ar15 and ar10 to colt who "improved" it. They should have left it the way it was.

  3. How does any of his vids get a thumbs down!!!! If u dont like his vids u are a troll my friend. I always learn something new when i watch him. Thought that needed to be said gents.

  4. Charging an ar15 with a scope and arthritis is quite difficult.
    Have built 2 .223 uppers and a
.308 using Gibbz uppers, they are fantastic.
Their handguards are heavy but i shoot from a rest mostly now so no big deal.

  5. Side charging AR is probably the way I'll go with my next build, but not with a LH charge. Reminds me too much of my FAL. Would be great for my GF since she is LH, but not for myself.

  6. I'm posting this on the Gibbz videos because they removed it from their website 😒, I purchased their receiver set with fore-grip and while it does have really nice features, they are 6061 instead of 7075, its not posted anywhere on their site (which is shady to me), so far I have not had any problems with it but the material properties between the two alloys is very different so only time will tell.

  7. The bigger cam pin is to make contact with the upper above the opening cut that the side handle is going through. (standard AR upper don't have that cut)

  8. “It’s like $250 bucks or something…idk…”
You’re awesome Hickok. I like your channel cause you seem like a normal guy. You don’t waste time nitpicking, chasing every detail, etc.

  9. Bear Creek Arsenal (BCA) out of Sanford, NC makes some nice side charging uppers worth checking out, the charging handle is directly on the bolt on the right side of the upper though, I like that cause you don't have the open channel on the left side. Also, being in the Army and carrying an M4 for the last 15 years, I would think that large handle on the left side would get hung up on gear/body armor when worn by a right handed shooter.

  10. Right, one of the awkward things about an AR, or as we usually put it, what of the less than ergonomic things of the AR. It's just not ergonomic. The natural position of a charging handle is in the middle to slightly forward from the middle of the rifle on the left for righties, and on the right for lefties. So this is an improvement of the AR, most definitely.

  11. hmm this is interesting, Differs from Bear Creeks version, the side charging handle. on their it is actually on the BCG instead on on the upper as this on is. cool one

  12. This video reminded me of a side charging handle mod I found recently. You literally swap out your old rear charging handle with this one and its a direct conversion in like less than 1 minute. Its called the GFG Side Charger. Would you review it if they sent you one or if you got a hold of one?

  13. If you're going to have a side charging bolt carrier I would want it to charge on the left side of the rifle. I've seen others that are on the right side which seems to be as awkward as the original charging handle. Unless you use your left hand to reach over or under the upper receiver that might work.

  14. The side bolt-handle is an interesting concept- Wouldn't it be better if the handle folded down when not in use (as in the H&K91)? Coupled with the forward "assist" it would widen the weapon a good bit. But then the product demonstrated has no FA.. But still. Left side is the best place for the bolt handle, as it is easier to grab w/ left hand while retaining control of the grip and trigger as on the FAL. Lack of a reciprocating bolt handle on the AR has never been a problem for me – I eject the offending round if possible and move on- but I can see where it COULD become an issue. Been shooting a nonFA AR for decades and it just hasnt been a problem. Nor have I ever needed to slam a bolt home on any of my other auto rifles.
I like this idea- if I live long enuff to buy another AR something like this will be on the list.
Thanks and kudoes to Hickok45 and whoever is doing the filming for the interesting videos.

  15. Hickok is a retired teacher? Well he's got the teaching style- but I'm a bit disappointed, all this time I was under the impression that he is a retired correctional officer!
