ILA | Minnesota: House and Senate Omnibus Bills Update

On Monday, the Minnesota House is scheduled to consider the House Public Safety/Judiciary Omnibus legislation.  This bill has been amended to contain House File 8 and House File 9, two gun control measures heavily opposed by NRA.  Please contact your state Representative and strongly urge them to OPPOSE the House Public Safety/Judiciary omnibus legislation.

House File 8, sponsored by Rep. Dave Pinto (64B-DFL), would impose so-called “universal” background checks for most private firearm transfers, potentially criminalizing almost all private firearm transfers in Minnesota.

House File 9, sponsored by Rep. Ruth Richardson (52B-DFL), would violate an individual’s constitutional rights and allow for a chief law enforcement officer or designee to petition the court for an ex parte order to remove an individual’s Second Amendment rights without due process.

On Wednesday evening, the Minnesota Senate passed the Senate Judiciary Omnibus bill, SF 802.  No gun control amendments were added to the bill, despite similar attempts in the House.  However, Senator Ron Latz (DFL-46) did speak about universal background checks and other anti-gun legislation in his closing remarks.

Thank you to all the NRA members and Second Amendment supporters who contacted their state Senators and urged them to oppose any attempts to amend SF 802 with gun control amendments.

Stay tuned to NRA-ILA alerts for more information and updates from St. Paul.
