@FelixA9
send me the ammooracle link to arfcom when you get a chance.
i can't use the search without a membership.
i'm gonna fire 55 gr and 62 gr tomorrow out of an a1, 1:12 and and then an a2 , 1:9 uppers with the leupold (barrel vised for consistency).
i'll let you know what i find out if i don't die of heat exhaustion.
@FelixA9
paraphrased from the 2002 jane's defense flier i stole from work:
Existing 1:12 inch twist barrels reduced the effective range of the SS109 to 90 m due to lack of stability.
the ideal twist rate for the SS109 projectile is 1:9 inch.
however, a 1:7 inch twist rate was chosen to stabilize the much longer L110 tracer (which doesn't necessarily help the accuracy of the non-tracer round).
i was arguing the difference between 1:7/9 and 1:12 twist rates but i was writing 1:7-1:9 whoops
@FelixA9
ok, i'm checking it out.
for the record up front, i'm positive that if i confirm the zero tomorrow on my 1:9 barrel with a 62 gr load that my point of impact is going to be different with a 55 gr bullet and the same scope.
i'm using a leupold mk4 6.5-20×50 er/t m1 mildot and qr mount w/ integrated rings for flat top uppers.
my point is, that scope is calibrated specifically for the 55 gr round and that it won't offer the same acuracy potential when using another load.
dinner 1st.
@tapper45
ha, i spelled competition wrong.
@FelixA9
i'm trying not to waste any of their time with your lack of knowledge and willingness to read exactly what i said.
@FelixA9
1:7 and 1:9 twists are OPTIMIZED for the different loads 62gr and 55 gr.
the SCOPE IS MIL DOTTED FOR 55 GRAIN. NOTHING ELSE.
the scope is not designed to shoot with 62 gr ammo. the firing solutions won't mil out right.
i've been shooting both grains for 23 years in the army with and without scopes, known and unknown ranges, for fun, for work and for competion.
i have been taught professionally, have taught , and currently teach mildot firing solutions. learn to read.
@FelixA9
its pretty simple.
slower twist=lighter bullet.
faster twist=heavier bullet.
the ar/m16 has gone through several twist rate changes AND corresponding optimized gr size changes since it was 1st introduced.
if you don't differentiate between 55 gr and 62 gr bullets and the huge difference in point of impact when fired from the exact same gun under the exact same circumstances you don't know shit about ballistics.
@vampirekiller69
the real dealbreaker is that it isn't "for your ar", it is for "your dad's ar".
the m223 scopes are all optimized for the 55gr bullet. who the hell shoots that anymore from an ar?
sure you can swap complete uppers to shoot 55 gr instead of 62 but why spend the extra money ?
most people will do that to shoot 9mm or 6.8mm.
did nikon japan dream this up?
do they know the difference between 1:7 and 1:9 twist?
wow, let's run out to the store and re-barrel to use this scope!
Too bad that 2-8 doesn't have adjustable parallax and a 30mm tube. Oh well… still going to get it.
i want one
@vampirekiller69 the reticles are on there. Click on the M223 scope you want, then click RETICLES on the left, right below the picture of the scope
Why in the world would Nikon not have a picture of the reticle on their website? Talk about a dealbreaker….
