Tomorrow April 8th is Sine Die for the Maryland General Assembly and numerous gun control bills may come up for a vote, including House Bill 786 and Senate Bill 737. Amended in committee, both versions of this legislation are now the same. Each would criminalize the private transfer of long guns, including between family members. It is important that you contact your Delegate and Senator and strongly urge them to OPPOSE any gun control legislation on the final day of session.
House Bill 786, sponsored by Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary, originally sought to create “Long Gun Qualification Licenses (LGQL).” Following the amendments made in committee, HB 786 now seeks to ban the private transfer of long guns in Maryland. This legislation is just another step to make it more difficult for law-abiding gun owners to possess and transfer their private property, even between family members. Senate Bill 737, sponsored by Senator Susan Lee, is the cross-file of HB 786.
Again, please contact your lawmakers and strongly urge them to OPPOSE House Bill 786 and Senate Bill 737 when they come up for a vote.
