After reading lots of panic and misinformation regarding the M-16 bolt carrier, and whether or not it constitutes an illegal machine gun part, I thought this video might be in order. Remember guys, lots of off-the-rack AR-15s are coming with this bolt carrier from the factory- most notably the Colt 6920. Check out the links, and realize there’s nothing wrong with a little extra BCG weight…

The way I look at it, when buying an AR 15 like the Rugar or the Smith N Wesson M&P, those guns come with a cut down BCG so to make it harder to ever convert the gun to full auto.
But laws change and so could the need for citizens to need to do some for of combat. So replacing the cut back BCG is a thing that should be done just in case.
Great video man!
Just curious what magazine coupler are you using at 0:06 I have been searching but haven't been able to find it. It would be greatly appreciated if you or anyone else in the comments can help me out on this !
Thanks guys!
HOLY CRAP ITS MACKLEMORE!!!!  Good video man. 😀
The bolt itself is the same between the two- only the carrier is different, and it's not really subjected to the kind of forces that I'm concerned about carrying a spare. A spare bolt though? I don't have strong opinions for or against MPI tested bolts, but I would carry a spare no matter what. That cam pin hole is a weak spot, either way…
spell check on spair there-*spare
So it is a good thing to put an M16 bolt in an AR without damaging the upper reciever? Just curious? I figured it would be a more durable solution so you we wouldn't have to buy spair AR bolts all the time,LOL!
why does the key have to be staked if you use high temp lock tite?
I don't know of a drill bit that will turn a corner inside of a hole.. This is one reason why they are separate. Another reason is if it is one solid piece and the gas key is damaged to a failure point you would need a $100 BC instead of a $25 gas key..
New original "M16" BCG are banned from production?
Doesn't Colt's 6920/M4 Carbine series of rifles all have that bolt carrier?
Don't forget the other huge difference: THE SHROUDED FIRING PIN. Big deal there too.
because it is a replaceable and serviceable part. The key can become damaged over time, however the carrier is still good. Ask an armorer for the full explanation or look it up in the exhaustive arms manuals.
Never having actually assembled a carrier myself (or built/milled/forged one), I would guess they don't machine it as one piece because drilling the channels for gas venting properly after the fact would be too difficult/expensive.
And I get what you're saying about staking the gas key yourself, but if a manufacturer won't even do that little detail correctly, what other QC have they skimped on? Olympic Arms lower receivers with pin holes not being true from right to left come to mind…
sorry … but you're completely wrong dude.
This whole gas staking being such a HUGE deal to people and makes it a deal breaker (when all you have to do is take a hammer and a punch, then walla..milspec)
Why dont bolt carrier makers just machine the gas key into the carrier and negate the use of the screws all together, like the piston carriers
Great job!
liberally oil the cam pin or a swipe of grease on it and you'll be feelin' good as hell in no time.
.
Great info. thanks
you got it backwards on the ar cuts and m16 cuts. m16 bolt has less material on the bottom it's shorter to make up for the position of the auto sear. auto sear sits right above and ever so slightly forward of the safety. it's cut that way for the timing as well the bolt is almost locked into battery when the auto sear is tripped. with the ar bolt they just mill out enough so you can fit the firing pin in from the bottom and so the bolt isn't too heavy to function properly. i'm military smallarm
You can get a nickel boron one from Humlund for $150.
I seen a guy who had the gas key milled into the bolt carrier.
Thanks for posting! Working on my first AR build and was worried about going with the M-16 bolt for legal reasons even though everything I read stated that it was designed and performed better. Great video, very well done.
I don't think I've ever had a problem with my bolt carrier not being balanced. But good info though…
hey i have a del ton ar15 not the best ar15 as u know prob what is a better ar15 that shots the best an is a ar with a piston 1 better ?
I got my SKS for $220. It's Chinese with all the tapco parts. It definatly isnt accurate like an AR-15 but i have out shot a friend with an AK-47. Can't get tight groups from 100yards like an AR-15. The Tapco system makes them very easy to break down and clean. I would rather have an AR for sure though. I have some vids of my SKS if you want to have a look at them.
What do you think about the SKS? I can't afford and AR and AK's are too hard to track down. Would it be a good choice for someone looking for a true battle rifle?
Pretty good video… however I am still waiting for my Taurus Millenium Pro Series Pistol review video! C'mon Eric, get with it! lol
Another good video.
Funny, I just started the podcast where you were covering this topic on my way back home from my route. Odd timing.
Thanks for the info.
