EOTech EXPS 3-0: Still The Best Holographic Optic?

I do some shooting with the EOTech EXPS3-0 holographic sight, throw it in a lake, discuss the history of the optic, and how it’s performed so far during the review.

  1. Looking at maybe throwing a 518 on a 10mm carbine. Wondering if that's the way to go or should I go with this or an Aimpoint. I've got a Vortex strike fire 2 on my AR-15. It's ok, great for the price. I'm thinking the 1 moa dot might be better.

  2. I have been looking at one of these and the G33 mag for my Sig. These seem great, but my buddy brought up the whole if the shit hits the fan I better have a lot of batteries stocked up. I have been interested in this optic for awhile and wanted to get it with taxes but…I am torn now between this and one of the solar Halosuns….because if shit does hit the fan…wouldn't a solar optic be better?

  3. I'll admit to preferring EOTech XPS/EXPS over Aimpoints (and I own Aimpoints – H1, T1, T2, M4s). I know everyone likes to bring up battery life as a "con", and when compared to Aimpoint there's no comparison. However none of the reviews about EOTech optics goes into the mechanics/physics as to the reasons why battery life isn't as good as an Aimpoint or similar LED powered optics. Holographic technology just requires much more power to run and if the engineers at EOTech or Vortex could figure out how to draw more battery life out of CR123 batteries then I'm sure they would have by now. It's actually quite impressive that an EOTech will last as long as it does on a single battery and there's certainly an advantage of running a holographic circle dot over an LED red dot in my opinion. If I were still clearing rooms for a living I'd still pick the EOTech over any other reflex sight on the market today.

  4. I appreciate your detailed review. I'm trying to convince my department to authorize EOTechs for use on duty rifles; however, our head range master still has his panties in a bunch over their recent DOJ lawsuit. It doesn't help L3 hasn't done anything about it to reintroduce themselves to law enforcement agencies as better and reliable. I'm currently running an AimPoint Micro T-2. It's a good red dot, but not my top choice. Anyway, I plan on showing him your review video. Any ideas how I can convince him to approve EOTechs? Btw, are you aware of any new changes or updates to EOTechs for 2019? Have you gotten the scoop from shot show 2019? Just curious..

  5. I picked the Eotech because I only have one eye, therefor I need as much field of view as possible. Thanks for the great review. But you know what keeps distracting me? I cannot help but wonder at how the bass fishing is on your lake? Just wondering how large a bass you could pull out from under your neighbors dock.

  6. If you're using a magnifier that zero parallax thing is a big deal. Minor cheek weld shifting can make the magnifier pick up the dot from dramatically different angles in the window. Regardless of how you have the azimuth in the magnifier adjusted. And the 1moa center dot is a lot more usable.

But dat aimpoint battery life tho… lol

  7. Eotechs also dont 'smear or bloom' behind a magnifier like red dots typically do. Having both, the eotech is visually much better, but as noted the battery life isnt great. As far as the button goes, muscle memory and training also play a role. I turn mine off and shoot rounds just to see where I'm at. To 40 yards, still hitting 5" groups turned off. About 8-10" with a red dot fwiw…

  8. Please review the Sightmark Ultra Shot, M-Spec FMS. They claim 40 ft submersion, and 704tactical beat the hell out of one and it did great. I'd like to get your opinion on it too.

  9. Large number of complaints on the Amazon page that they got a knock-off sights. This could be the fact Amazon has a massive problem with selling expensive stuff and people returning some cheap crap in the package, then Amazon sells it to the next buyer (with NO inspection).
