FAIRFAX, Va. — Chris W. Cox, executive director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action, today released the following statement in response to Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s decision to vote against the confirmation of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee:

“Today, Heidi Heitkamp announced her intent to vote against the basic right to keep a firearm in your home for self-defense. Make no mistake – that is what’s at stake. Currently, the Supreme Court is split on upholding the constitutional right to protect yourself in your own home with a gun. Heidi Heitkamp’s opposition to a qualified nominee who will uphold the U.S. Constitution makes it clear that party politics are more important to her than North Dakotans’ fundamental right to self-defense.”

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen’s group. More than five million members strong, NRA continues to uphold the Second Amendment and advocates enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation’s leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the armed services.
