EOTech 512 Accident!

This is intended to be a review of my impressions of the sight and the company behind the product. I am happy with both. The sight has served me well, I’ve only experience this one problem and the company has said they will do the right thing and fix it for me. I will keep you posted on how they follow through. Again this isn’t intended to be a “this thing broke and sucks” video. It is a good product with a good company behind it.

  1. Well no shit it broke if you're using it on that hand cannon. You can only ask so much from a product, regardless of the price. High tech, relatively sensitive optics aren't meant for extreme shock applications.

  2. Since rifle recoil is distributed to our shoulders via the stock, whereas a handgun is just kind of hovering out there, I would think that handgun recoil would be far worse for a sight than a rifle would be. Plus considering that beast is more of a hand cannon than a handgun, you can see the challenges to a sight.

  3. i believe they are rated for a 50 bmg the 500 magnum should not be a problem but i don't think it matters if its broke eo tech will fix it one of the benefits of spending 500$ on a sight

  4. Dude! Your 500 KILLED that EOTech! Can't say I'm really surprised. I picked up a used 512 for $250 (LE trade in). The sight seems like it has had a long, stressful life. It is STILL awesome though, and functions flawlessly…as long as it doesn't find itself getting gooched from below by an elephant round.

Thanks for sharing it's limitations with us. We know what NOT to do. Good to hear that EOTech takes care of their customers!!!

  5. What is going to damage a sight isn't the g force of the gun moving after a shot. What damages stuff is the high frequency concussive force that moves through the materials. Different materials are damaged by diff vibration frequencies so yes,you are correct,a bigger cal doesn't always make for more damage but it's not because of the felt recoil,it's because of the concussive force traveling through the frame of the gun. Same reason screws & stuff work loose. (Just relaying info given to me)

  6. Yeah in the military we mount them to the M2 50 cal but that is a huge difference in the blunt force trauma caused by a 500. The M2 is several times the weight and size of that firearm not to mention mounted on a tripod or vehicle turret mount, the recoil is nowhere near what a 500 6 pound handgun being held in your hands is. VERY understandable that the eotech gave out after too many shots with a gforce pressure like that.

  7. Man that IS SWEET! Walther barrel and non fluted cylinder (for weight) and probably the sweetest Smith&Wesson trigger you'll ever squeeze! I miss my 629 Classic Hunter. By the way, I echo you sentiments about the Eotech. Got one on my M&P 15 and it rocks…day OR night. Just tapped a Texas Hill Country jack rabbit at 120 yards Saturday night using mine and shootin' off hand out of a Polaris side by side.

  8. I would talk to them & tell them what it's going on if you haven't already. If they say it's ok I would assume the first time it broke was one of those freak cases. If it breaks again you will be able to tell them that they said it was ok to put on the 500 so they will replace or repair it again. I am with you,I don't think you cam fault a company for a freak breakage, especially when they fix it quickly.

  9. When I mounted it to my 500 I thought like you that it'd be fine. Mine is just a sample of ONE sight, maybe someone got lazy when mine was made, I don't know. What I do know is that I still love my EOTech and they fixed it free of charge and rushed the shipping to get it back to me. Can't ask for a better response from a company. The recoil forces on a 500 S&W are tremendous. I have heard of problems from people who put telescopic handgun scopes on them too.

  10. I can't imagine a good EOTech can't take the recoil of that 500. It's harsh but they mount those EOTechs on full auto .50 cals. Mine has been great. It has survived 7 yrs of regular use and 1 car accident. I had a battery burst (my fault for not regularly checking it) and EOTech told me how to repair it,sent out the parts to fix it & even called me back to make sure it was working. It cost me nothing to get it fixed and that was on a 7yr old unit. I am very happy with mine. Great product/company

  11. lol. probably wouldn't mount a parallaxing optic to A 500. You might as well take advantage of this beast accuracy and stick to magnification scopes built to keep a zero under recoil. For 3 gun there is nothing better than holographic.

  12. I hope you like yours as much as I do mine! Even though this happened I have zero complaints they fixed it and got it back to me QUICK!! Just figured I'd share my experience! Thanks!

  13. @Colt7602 I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! There is a black bear that has been in a bunch of the trail camera pictures this year, I'm hoping he'll stick his head out this year!! If he I'll let you know.
