Home assembled AR-15 from mail order sources…

DPMS lower
CMMG 14.5″ Government profile upper, mid-length gas system, micro block
pinned/welded Yankee Hill Phantom Flash Hider
Timney Target Trigger
Magpul UBR Buttstock
Magpul MOE Handgrip
Magpul MOE Triggerguard
Troy Industries 13.8″ MRF RX Tactical Rail
Eotech A65.1 Holographic Sight
DPMS Front and Rear (co-witness) Rail Sights
Magpul AFG2 Angled Fore Grip
Magpul XT Rail Covers
Inexpensive no-name flashlight mount
Fenix LD25 1 inch flashlight
Magpul Windowed AR-15 30 round magazines
Magpul Single Point Sling (not shown)

I installed/assembled everything. The Troy Rail was a bit of an adventure. I had to cut off the ring and omega spring assembly with a dremel tool due to the welded on flash hider. That wasn’t too bad, kind of bead blasted part of the upper finish inadvertently with the powderized aluminum spray – scratched the receiver also when the dremel slipped as well… but it was the front handguard retainer that was the unexpected pain in the ass, it was practically welded on, it would not BUDGE … ended up cutting it off with the dremel also!

Heavy gun @ 9.5 pounds as you see it in this vid, but exactly what I set out to build – a short, accurate tactical carbine for use in real world WROL defense, like after a natural disaster – not a lightweight fantasy end of the world wander the wasteland post-apocalypse gun. I have a lighter AR-15 as well, in case I do have to wander the post-apocalyptic wasteland! LOL 🙂 I’ll do a vid review of it later, doing some upgrades to it right now – its in pieces!

  1. Civilians may be concerned about weight. Weight distribution perhaps. Military, you have what you need to get the job done. Maybe heavy, maybe not. Depends on your leadership or physical capabilities. Either way, you get used to the weight. 240 Bravo w/tripod and considerable ammo on top of gear etc. M4/AR weight barebones is just under 7lbs. 3lbs extra… FYI: 240 Bravo alone weighs just under 30lbs. Just saying as far as military goes.

  2. My brother is a soldier and works with a bomb dog. After his third tour weight of what he carries is critical. He goes on missions for days at a time sometimes weeks. He won't put rail covers on his m4 because he says ounces add up. So when he has to carry enough food and water to sustain himself and his working dog id say people have the right to complain about the weight as much as they want.

  3. Why do people get so butthurt about weight. My m4 in derkaderkastan was 10 pounds flat with a mag in. I had the same angled grip, DBAL behind the front site post and light on the right. An Acog and buis round that off. I never thought it was very heavy and thought the added weight up front really helped with recoil.

  4. Nice choice with the flashlight as far as not going with too much light. So many people think more light is better, but for home defense and if you happen to have white walls…you will wash out your optics with too much light against white walls. Nice build! I am building up something very similar.

  5. I dont recall, its changed so much, dang AR15s are like freaking Lego sets, you can swap and mix and match and I have 4 of them. I would have to guess that all told, optic included I spent over 1200 clams, but that got me exactly what I wanted … at that time.

  6. I know it may look a little odd but what if you flipped the front sight in the other direction? I will place the the knob where you want it but will it affect the performance of the sight?

  7. Im not sure you know or not, but I want my sig556 to look this way with the rail extending to the end like yours. Do they make a rail for the sig556 that is 13.8 or whatever it has to be. Thanks

  8. Thanks for the quick reply! Either way, I'm sure it still did it's job when you squeezed the trigger. I haven't done much to my DPMS, but I really like the idea of that full length rail with an AFG. I don't know much about rails, personally, but I hear you can get a full length Troy rail, and they're pretty light.

  9. That MagPul buttstock and the long rail added alot of weight. The buttstock is surprisingly heavy. I swapped it out for an ACE SOCOM buttstock. I still have that rail on it, but I'm going to get rid of it too, go with a shorter lighter one… alot of money spent just to learn a lesson I could have figured out by looking up weights online. OUCH!

  10. Very nice setup, I have a similar setup only in FDE. Mine has the CMMG 16 inch barrel with the A2 front sight 1/9 twist 5.56 and a spikes tactical nickle boron coated bcg, bcm "gun fighter" charging handle. It has the DPMS lower with the MOE treatment
