First Look: Savage 110 Scout in .308 Win – What’s in the Box?

I normally don’t like to film unboxing videos, but I’ll make an exception for the new Savage 110 Scout. Does the rifle ship with the Accu-Fit cheek risers and buttstock spacers?

Eventually I’ll produce a full review video of Savage’s take on the Jeff Cooper scout rifle concept. I plan to test the rifle in practical scenarios, including a mixed-distance speed shoot and suppressed rifle tests with subsonic ammo. I can’t wait to find out what a subsonic 208-grain Hornady A-Max bullet sounds like and wrecks like.

In answer to the question of what comes in the box, I was surprised to find that it’s…everything. The 110 Scout rifle ships with a 10-round AICS-pattern Magpul PMAG, several buttstock spacers for setting length-of-pull, and five interchangeable cheek risers for getting your eye exactly where you need it behind the scope. If you account for the fact that the Savage 110 Scout comes with iron sights installed, the rifle is ready to shoot right out of the box. Just grab some ammo on the way to the range.

These AccuFit parts take the Savage Accustock to a new level. No more need for handmade spacers or aftermarket cheek rests.

Jeff Cooper’s scout rifle concept calls for a forward-mounted optics rail, requiring an extended eye relief scope or a pistol scope. At first I will test this rifle with an older Simmons Gold Medal pistol scope, then later I’ll show a more modern offering from Nikon, the FORCE XTR.

  1. It's borderline perfect, but why no mount for a Ching sling? I would argue that's far more important to the scout rifle concept than the silly forward scope mount and (admittedly not silly) removable magazines.

  2. Good points on the barrel, I've seen some reviews mention that the 110 scout is heavier than Cooper's original specs, but I wouldn't kick the 110 scout out of bed for being a little heavy. To quote Colion Noir speaking of the FNX 45, "Sometimes a girl will gain a little weight… and she realizes that some dudes like their girls BBW and owns it, and that makes her more sexy."

  3. Hypothetical question. With pencil barrels getting better and "AR10's" getting lighter and more reliable is the scout rifle concept dead? Taking into consideration flip up sights and all manner of optics available to us these days? I actually find bold guns more fun but a lightweight AR10 is probably more versatile.

  4. It seems to me that an AR10 with a low-power 1-4/6/8x scope would be a much better "scout" rifle than the bolt action Scout-concept rifles. With the lo-po AR-10 rifle, you have the hard-hitting caliber, long eye relief two-eyes open shooting ability, defensive and offensive capability, hunting/survival capability, etc.

  5. I'm looking forward to the AICS magazine compatibility test! I just ordered a Savage 110 Tactical that appears to use the same bottom metal; it would be great to know what my best option is for spare mags.

  6. I am looking forward to this review. I having been looking at this and the Mossberg that runs the 308AR PMAGs. I'm looking for a hunting rifle that's lighter than both my 308AR and my 700 magnum, takes common magazines and comes threaded for my silencer. My only gripe with this is the need to buy a pistol/scout type scope with a longer eye relief, while I already own several QD mounted standard type scouts. Then again, I may end up preferring a scout scope. We'll see how your review goes.

  7. The Hide channel Looks great very interesting like the course in the backyard I think I’m gonna like this new channel you recommended definitely want one of those T-shirts. Especially since I was SRT trained combat military police. Of course most of our hides were with in 400 yards of our target but still we did the same job.

  8. OK now you’ve peaked my interest since I’m always looking for a new gun this could be it. My savage model 10 FCPSR308 is set up for long range and is quite heavy to be hauling around however this new savage 110 scout could be the ticket that I wanted. Looking forward to the testing of this rifle oh yes and the magazines very important thank you love the videos love the channel. Sorry I’ve been away for a while finishing up the horrible divorce. And now I am out in the country and can shoot my rifle’s on my property it is awesome hopefully the next two months I will be building a shooting range on the back 2 acres and I can Do some testing myself. And I found a long distance range about 11 miles from my property that goes out to 1000 yards. Just what I needed. Great channel I will be keeping an eye out for the testing and build thank you again

  9. Well i maid the m istake of buying a Savage Axis1 in 6.5 Creedmoor and have owned it for over a year and havnt had the pleasure of even shooting it yet.You see in my Communist state of N.J. there is really no ranges to test out the long shot of the 6.5?Not to mention our Communist Governor is planning to drop our Magazine capacity down from 15 to 10.So i have been purchasing 15round mags just about every friday since i heard its easily moving thru our state Government! Its quite sad that i can do what i want to do so bad which is get into long range shooting when the longest range in our state is only 300 to 400yrds!!!I love shooting as a hobby and would love to get into long range target competitions and yet its just not an option in my state and i dont have the time nor the money to travel to do it!Its time WE THE PEOPLE did something about that!!!
