There are a variety of AR-15 barrel lengths and styles out there. Some short. Some long. But what would you say is just right? Considering things like reliability, speed, accuracy and maneuverability to find a length that works for multiple purposes, I would have to say 12.5 inches.

I love my 10.5" Faxon barreled AR pistol. It is so light and maneuverable. Head shots at 100 yards and chest hits at 200 yards are no problem. It is perfect as a vehicle or home defense gun and useful past 200 yards. I do think some kind of softpoint ammo or SMK are going to be more effective than 55gr fmj.
My 11.5" sbr. Allows me to do everything from clearing rooms in tight spaces to reaching out and hitting man size targets at 300yrds. Hasn't failed me yet

As for my preferred barrel length, it'll have to be the standard 10.5 inch. With Federal XM193 5.56 55gr FMJ, you're looking at about 400 ft/lbs of energy at 300 yards compared to the 12.5 inch getting only 50 more ft/lbs of energy.
I’m a 14.5in myself. My Colt 6921 socom is perfect for me.
No moron thinks loss of velocity means loss of accuracy. There however morons who think decreased length of barrel means decreased accuracy do exist
I have often asked people in the industry why the 12.5” AR is not more popular, I never really get a good answer. I was looking for the BCM 12.5” SBR but they only seem available via special order. One day I will get into the 12.5” space…

Two things. One, bet you do like a nice 12.5in…..Two, I also prefer 12.5in, but depending on what I have to penetrate have been known to get the job done with something as small as a 10.3in….
I dont mind running a 14.5 but if I could only have 1 it would be my 12.5 bcm

Lol!!! The .223 is a varmint round. A varmint round depends more of velocity than sectional density to get the job done, hence the regular barrel length of 20 inches used on the original design. If your goal is to make noise and fire balls congrats for choosing a sub optimal barrel for your caliber. If you want a short barrel, the 300 Blk Out or maybe the 7.62×39 is better suited.
