Moving out at a mere 1,050 feet per second, my subsonic 6.5 Creedmoor handloads use Hodgdon Trail Boss power and a magnum primer to launch a 140-grain flat-base spire-point bullet from Speer. I chose these bullets for their stability at low speeds. In the last test, where we shot heavy .308 subsonics, the energy was a bit less than a .357 Magnum at 509 ft-lbs. These 6.5mm projectiles only produce 343 ft-lbs of energy, roughly the same as 9mm Luger. Consider the sleeker profile and soft tip of the Hot-Cor bullet, and you have a round that can retain its energy for a few hundred yards and then bloom into a wide cutting tool on impact. This could be an excellent tool for quietly dispatching destructive pests like the coyote that’s been eating your chickens. In this test the core of our subsonic round penetrated roughly 18 inches of water and kept going, shedding its jacket in the third water jug.
