Why is everyone so caught up on how dangerous an AR-15 is? A Mini-14, is functionally, about the same gun. You just don't hear a lot about a Mini-14, because it's not used as much. A Mini-14 fires the same rd. A Mini-14 has the same rate of fire. A Mini-14 comes with a 30 rd. magazine. A Mini-14 and an AR-15 just look different. Hell. I wonder how many anti-gun advocates, could pick the two apart, from each other.

I believe freedom is fundamental to living a full life. This means we have the ability to choose and make decisions on our own. The truth is that even though we are for the most part civilized and logical, we AREN'T CIVILIZED OR LOGICAL ALL THE TIME. Sadly that's part of our nature. You may tell yourself otherwise, that you are always logical, that you are always civilized. When we are hurt, financially (Loosing 401K), emotionally (Wife cheats on you with your neighbor), ideologically(People ridicule your principles) we tend to make decisions that aren't civilized or logical. But those things that hurt you…that's part of life and have occurred to many people in the past, present and will in the future. But you have also heard that events like this in some ones life have caused them to become aggressive, illogical and uncivilized. Ask yourself, if some one were illogical and uncivilized would I want them to have easy access to a weapon that can kill 60 people in 60 seconds? But off course not you.. right? You wouldn't do such a thing because your logic and principles are…different. The truth is we are all capable of hurting others. How about we just don't have access to these weapons in the first place? Can we really trust ourselves..maybe. Can we trust others…no. So that when we come around from our illogical and uncivilized state we would not leave in that wake 60 people dead in 60 seconds.

If your reason to have gun is for protection against the government then I don't think that's a valid reason either. It would mean nothing against a modern Airforce, modern Infantry or a modern Navy. Nukes, carpet bombs, drones, Modern Tanks. This isn't 1776.

Edit: I'm quite aware that killing 60 people in 60 seconds with any of the guns available for purchase is close to impossible. It was a metaphorical statements but was used to highlight the damage a gun can deliver in very little time.

The issue of banning a semi-auto weapon assumes that a need to defend oneself is based on one gun and one shooter and completetly ignores mulitple guns and multiple shooters. If this were not the issue, AKs and ARs and hi-cap magazines would not be the most popular type of firearms. Criminals don't care about laws. I care about my life and reserve the right to defend it and mine.

In 2017 according to the CDC there where estimated between 500,000 and 1.5 Million Violent crimes prevented or stopped because the victim had a firearm, in that same year there were only 50,000 people killed from firearms and 30,000 of those deaths were suicides. If you wanna do the math and be conservative assuming only 500,000 lives were saved and that all 50,000 people killed where innocent civilians than guns still save 1,000% of the lives they killed, for each person that is killed with a gun there are 10 violent crimes prevented with one in america .
