Mount Height for an Optic on an AR15

Optic mounts come in a variety of heights now but what height is best for mounting an optic on your AR15? Commonly seen are absolute co-witness and lower 1/3 co-witness. As of recently we are starting to see mounts become higher. Let me know in the comments what your preference is.

  1. What about clearing the Iron front sights ruining a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6?

I want to not have interference a longer distances where the guages would come into play.

  2. Picked up some useful info. But lots and lots of acronyms. Had no idea what you were talking abt for much of the vid. Seems aimed at guys already deeply involved in the sport.

  3. I'm running a Romeo 3 dot on a 2" mount on my 50 beowulf & absolutely love it, but on my ar10 I run a lower 1/3rd with my swamp fox lpvo. Great content thanks man 👍

  4. What's funny is I recently did a build and I wanted to keep my carry handle. When in inquired about keeping it and putting a red dot on top everyone said "its too high" and even one optics dealer I went too told me I don't want to do that lol. I have an MRO on top now and I love it. I did a 50m zero and it holds pretty well out to 100 but I notice at 25m and under I do have to aim high. For like the ideal thoracic cavity/mediastinum target the point of aim is about neck. I love keeping my head and neck in a more neutral position than the forward slouched position. I like having an open field of view with no obstructions through my glass, its high enough where I don't even see the rifle, and with just a slight adjustment of head position I have my irons always ready to go with a 25/300m zero. Also shooting with barricades or even prone I could lay the rifle more horizontal lowering my signature, something I can't do with a lower mount. Just takes some getting used to point of impact difference in close engagements.

It's funny how the AR community goes in circles and it always almost comes back to the A1 still being the perfect rifle. Rifles got heavy and now we want them light again, length of pull got longer and shorter and now the A1 LOP is almost where everyone puts their stocks at, optics mounts are almost as high or equal that of A1 carry handle, barrels got thicker now they're back to pencil barrels. Stoner really did make the zenith of center fire cartridge rifles. Almost 60 years and I don't see anything replacing it until we get to a new ammunition type.

  5. ADM doesn't make a 1.7 (lower 1/3 mount) LPVO mount… Badger Ordinance makes a 1.7 but they want $300 for it. Anyone else offering 1.7? Sounds like the best of both worlds to me and would allow standardizing red dots and lpvo mounting heights.

  6. I've been an absolute co-witness guy for a long time when available, then I realized I was a much quicker shooter with my EOtech EXPS series optics. I assumed this was because of the larger box and reticle vs dot. Then I tried a lower 1/3 on one of my Aimpoint CompM5s, nope, it's the height. Currently switching over everything to lower 1/3.

  7. I’ve typically run a lower 1/3 in the past for my home rifles and absolute on my duty gear. However, I also have recently switched to a 2” mount and am not looking back. As many others have alluded to, seldom do you need to ditch your optic for irons. It’s perfectly acceptable to configure your optic to maximize ergonomics—so long as, for that 0.01% chance you need your irons, you can dismount the optic and press on. I’ll offer that, I no longer have a stiff neck the day after a long range session.

  8. @Wise Men Company
Any recommendations for people who hunt with AR's and not looking for a killing people or room entry scopes.? Popular 30mm tube scopes run a 50mm objective. What ring or mount height would allow the objective to clear the rail.??

  9. The next is 1.93 slightly lower than 2. 1/3 co-witness allows you to run fix sights. I ran co-witness for years, and thought why would I want to run something taller. After I went to a 1/3 with fix sights I NEVER looked back. For running and gunning, low power 1x shooting in a 1-6 hands down scaler works 1.93 period HANDS down. High power lots of prone precision shooting where cheek weld is up most importance go co-witness.

  10. Damn… is that your girl at the 2:10ish mark? Good catch bro! Especially for a cabbage patch doll… lol

I prefer the 1.93 for right now on my LVPO and a tad higher for my eotech… especially the wilcox mounts.
