  1. If you had to choose between the Nikon HG, Zeiss Conquest and Leica Trinovid for birding and owling, what would you choose? I'm leaning towards the Leica based on your reviews. My only hesitation is that my eyes are getting worse and it won't be long before I have to bird with glasses and I know the Leica have a short eye relief. But that didn't seem to be an issue for you. Thoughts?

  2. Can you speak to how the compare to the Zeiss Conquest for birding? pretty much have it down to these to brands and models for my next glass, each in 10x

  3. I went to Cabela's to see one of these. They didn't have any Nikon Monarch 5's, 7's or HG's… The guy there said that he thought that they hadn't been getting product from Nikon lately and thought that they may be getting out of the binocular business… Anyway, I ordered one of these exact (refurbished) binoculars from B&H Photo today. Looking forward to getting it. Thanks for the review!

EDIT: Just got the binoculars. I'm thrilled with them!

  4. Just picked up the Monarch HG 10×42 based on your reviews. I'm new to the world of optics and started with the Monarch 5 12×42. I liked them a lot until I got the HG and now it's hard for me to bother with them…..I can see that this is going to become a very expensive hobby for me lol. Thanks for the great info.

  5. Hi, Ethan. You mention in this review a slight collimation/alignment issue with the Monarchs, and I saw this as well when I checked out a pair at the shop. I had this issue with a set of Vortex Vipers and Razors, and even to a lesser extent with a set of Trinovids. The only binoculars I tried that seemed free of this problem were a pair of Swarovski SLCs. Do you know of any binoculars in the $1000 category that would be as well collimated as the Swarovskis, or am I going to have to fork over that last $600 to get this level of QC? Thanks in advance!

  6. Just ordered and received a refurbished set of these – first set of binoculars I've owned. What should I do to make sure they're good to go?

I checked for alignment best I could and didn't see anything out of line. I think I may be getting just a bit of eye strain but I am still adjusting everything and getting used to them… like I said, first set of nice optics I've ever looked through

  7. Just found your videos- I'm binging through your library! This channel is a great resource. Would you be interested in doing a comparison of Nikon Monarch HG 10x to the Mavenbuilt B.2 11x or 9x ? Thanks!

  8. I own leica ultravid 10×25 and 10×42, just out of curiosity I borrowed the this nikon 10×42 HG to compare. I'm very impressed! I would say at day time the difference is only for academic to measure, mere mortal won't see any difference, not even in shadows. At dawn and dusk there is probably around 5% or so better performance with ultravid. I prefer the mechanical design of nikon. I had 3 days to play with it.

  9. Hey great review again. You are killing it with these binoculars review. I am enjoying them. I have question for you about the 8×42 monarch 7s and the vipers. Will I be able to see how many points on a deer antlers at 500 yards or should I go with 10×42? I will be hunting places I have to be able tell at that distance. Thanks keep up the good work on the videos

  10. Hello. I’m looking into buying a new pair of binoculars and your videos are really helpful. I’ve seen a lot of videos and reviews between different brand but not a lot of information about Nikon HG compared with the rest of the world. It would be nice to have your opinion or a video comparing 8×42 binoculars ( Nikon HG, trinovid, and conquest ) . This are the 1000 binoculars that I’m considering for myself and cannot decide . I would go wit trinovid as I like the look and optics but I’m not sure if the field of view is a deal breaker. Who knows, maybe I will get so sick that I will jump in the end to slc. Wish you all the best from land of Dracula 🙂

  11. I used to try this several times at different optics shows – nice glass, but not an alpha level, still like a Monarch 7 оn steroids. You should try a Nikon EDG 10×42, or a previous alpha Nikon HG L (premier) 10×42 – they perform on a much higher level. The sharpness and color rendition as well as the build qiality are outstanding. They were designed co compete with the Victory FL and Swarovski EL.
But I woulld also highly reccomend to make a test of a Canon 10×42 L IS WP – as a perfect alpha glass from Canon, though it is a little bit on the heavy side. Superb optics and the image stabilsation is a true miracle. I own several IS binos from Canon (including two 10x42s ) and the IS function is an absolute must in my opinion.
