My parts kits came in and I managed to put it together without a vice. I would recommend not being lazy like me and cleaning up your shop enough to get to the bench vice. It all went together well though and I am starting to see the light!

  1. Great job! But the safety selector switch should have gone in first and a little oil would have made those roll pins gone in a little easier, especially the one for the bolt release. By the way where did you get that beautiful set of wood furniture for your rifle???

  2. On the pivot pen spring recess there is a hole about half way down. The trick is to push the spring down in the recess then use a small punch to hold the spring in. Then drop the retaining pin on top of the spring and put the the pivot pen in, pull the pen holding spring out and painless installation.

  3. The bolt catch pin, what I did which worked nicely for what I was working with…I used a set of vice grip pliers to squeeze the pin in place, I did the same with trigger guard pin. I had a piece of denim separating so it wasn't metal on metal.

    good luck in future builds!

  4. @ArtisanTony pretty sure 28 is NF fine thread which are usually better quality , but as long as you gonna go to the bolt shop I'd get it in stainless which is much better when mateing up steel to aluminum and if they don't have stainless try for a #5 or #8 tensil strenth bolt with 8 being the hardest

  5. @aaadream haha, I actually have 3 vices and that is why I said I was being lazy. I have one here and two big ones in our shop. 🙂 I just wanted to sit down at my desk and do it because making the video is easier that way 🙂 I am sure you have seen our shop in previous videos. Thanks!

  6. @Dambo96 I actually tried to find an allen head bolt on Sunday but could not find one 3" long, 1/4" x 28 thread count. But there is a company here called Atlas Bolt Company that I will go to in the next few days and pick up one. Thanks!

  7. @HawkLMT Yes, but I am not sure it would look complete without the wood fore end. I have seen few pictures of the complete set and I think it is petty sharp. One goal I have is to take the "assault" look away so that new shooters will be less intimidate with the .223/5.56. I plan to use this in my classes when teaching youth and I think parents will be more likely to allow their children to shoot this in lieu of a "tactical firearm" 🙂 The wood gives it more of a sporting look.

  8. @ArtisanTony Don't get me wrong, I admire your ability to improvise. We definitely have that in common. Forgot to mention I'm really liking the wood. Especially the grip and butt stock. Not sure what I think of the fore end yet though.

  9. That was great! It gave me some thoughts about trying it myself…. My skill level is quite a bit lower than yours, but your vid does simplify many of the tasks required. Thanks. J R

  10. @HawkLMT LOL, I organized the parts a little better after that 🙂 I had just dumped them out of the bag 🙂 I looked several places for a 3" bolt that was 1/4" and the 32 thread count but had to settle on that one so I just about had to slot it myself 🙂 Thanks!

  11. @daddyoca69 I know, I started not to make a video but I thought, what the heck 🙂 I learn better by doing than watching. A lot of the AR builds leave out some of the fun stuff like pins shooting out to oblivion and stuff like that 🙂 Thanks!

  12. At 1:58…"Good Lord" is right. When I saw those parts in a pile I spit my coffee a bit. Wow tony, for never having assembled a lower, and not having the right tooling, you did a great job! And you even made it a bit "Red Necky" by grinding that slot in the bolt instead of just buying a slotted one. Good Job!
