  1. Im building my very first ar15 and im not to sure what is the best caliber to build it in. I see most guys going .300 blackout. I wanted to go .556 because its cheaper for the bullets but whats so great about the .300 blackout?

  2. Another review of this forend said "CANNOT INSTALL FRONT IRON SIGHTS", apparently because it's round. Is it possible to get it dead-nuts center to install one? I see you've got a set on there… how about the height of the sights? Same plane?

  3. Sootch,
    I'm in the process of building a new lightweight AR. I took your advice and got the MFT stock a while ago for a different build and I love it. I'm looking at this kit for my new build, but do you think it's appropriate for a lightweight build?

  4. Hey Sootch, I'm building an AR with the following:

    7.62×39 upper;
    CMMG Mutant lower;
    YHM front and rear sights;
    XS std. dot peep sights, 24/7;
    Hogue grip and stock;
    Fostech Echo trigger.

    Not bad for an AK guy. I think it's a perfect marriage of both types of rifles.

  5. I recently purchased this Hogue kit for my AR. The one thing that I don't like which I have not seen mentioned anywhere is how quickly and how hot the forend gets. There is very little ventilation between the barrel and the forend. After just a quick 10 rounds the grip felt distinctly warm to the touch. It takes a while for the heat to penetrate the grip but after it does the rubber seems to retain it for quite sometime. I don't see this forend as being practical if you are planning on shooting a high number of rounds in a short amount of time. For me and my usage it will likely never be a problem but something you should consider when making the decision to buy. Love the rest of the kit though, especially the stock which slides easily yet has no discernible "wiggle".

  6. Thanks much looks like just what I need for a DPMS I bought from brother
    someone painted the forearm and grip desert beige and paint wears off from use and cleaning it gets stickily
    good review

  7. Looks really nice with the red and black, makes a nice change from the all black look. I'm thinking on going with the lava or gilley green for a rebuild of an old 5.56 AR with a quad rail that I never liked.

  8. I've used Hogue grips on my handguns for over 30 years. But I've never had any Hogue rifle stocks except for what came on my Remington 700. I don't care for that stock. But I'll check out the AR stock/furniture set. The enclosed part of the fore-end makes me wonder how well it dissipates heat on sustained fire. It seems like the fore grip would get very hot because of the lack of or reduced ventilation from the keymod fore-end I have on my ARs currently. Thanks for the review, Don. 🙂

  9. When I got my AR15 what I wanted the most was a quadrail so I could attach all my neat little addons etc… I got a really nice quadrial that ran me a few hundred bucks I think and it worked great, was nice and solid and felt strong plus of course had a lot of space for anything youd need… After awhile I realized I just didn't need all the rail space and the rails themselves made the rifle kind of a PITA to hold because it dug into my hands. After holding an AR with the Hogue overmolded forend I knew I had to get one for myself. For me the level of comfort and usability of the Hogue forend is the best ive found so far. You don't quite realize how much comfort can affect your shooting until you get your hands on a forend like this.

     The quality of the fore-end itself is amazing. Its super sturdy, goes on nice and tight and feel like the rifle was MADE with it attached, almost like its just forged on instead of simply screwed on. I also have slightly smaller hands and shorter fingers than average but my hands are chubby so it can be a bit tough to find grips/guns that really fit securely in my hands and this fore-end is VERY easy to grab and maintain a good grip on.

    I do sort of miss the ability to put attachements on my AR, specifically a light, but when it comes down to it, its not what id go for in the middle of the night if I needed my gun so a light isn't a necessity. As far as shooting at the range and doing competitions go, I couldn't imagine using a regular railed fore-end over the Hogue fore-end…

    I haven't come across anything better at this point.
