CMMG 22LR Conversion Kit Ammo Test – How Reliable Is It?

CMMG sent me a .22 Conversion kit that let’s you shoot low cost .22 ammo in a standard 5.56 or .223 AR-15. I wanted to see how reliably it functioned with a variety of ammo so I tried 4 different brands.

  1. Great video. I am curious how the mechanism and cycling works. Does it rely on the gas tube in any way for the bolt to cycle? Can it function if the gas block is closed? Very curious. Any insight will be very helpful. Keep posting! Thanks!

  2. with 1 in 9" or 1 in 12" rifling twists, and a dozen units, scoped, from the bench, the worst groups have been 2" at 50 yds, 5 shots. Some have been 1". 4 moa is plenty good enough for taking small game for food.

  3. they are cool and i considered getting one but for the price i just got a 2nd rifle. 2 rifles is better than one in my opinion. i prefer to have 2 for a few reasons. my 22lr rifle is used for squirrel hunting/cheap fun plinking and i dont have to sight in the scope often like i would going from .223 to 22lr all the time. the downside is i need 2 scopes/sights but oh well.
also i can take a friend to the range and both of us can have a gun to shoot. the 22 conversion kit certainly has its uses for cheap AR training and as a bug out item that lets your AR be more multi-functional by shooting .22lr for hunting and .223 for bigger hunting or self defense. im not worried about those last examples though. its right for some people but not me. great review though =)

  4. Had one and gave it away. The down side is it leads your barrel and can damage your barrel if you don't get the lead out before you shoot 5.56. Get a S&W 15-22 instead. Works better and no worries.

  5. I don't have an AR, but two of my cousins have AR's. I will tell them about the conversion kit. They are gun people and will probably give it a try. I have two 22 LR's and for the first time in three years I see 22LR ammo on the shelf at Walmart and another store I go to. It is still $6.99 for a box of 100 rounds. I prefer CCI Mini-Mag, but to each there own. It is nice to see a great American like yourself making a video about guns. Also, I love the shirt (at the range). Thanks Bryan!

  6. Cool! That should be insanely fun thing to have Bryan 🙂 All the fun with fraction of the price of the 223 ammo. When I visited a buddy of mine some weeks ago we were talking about the prices of ammo for his heavy barrel AR-15 ( and SAKO M92S in 7,62×39 ) . He said he has been considering a .22 conversion kit for it. To cut the ammo costs. That might do the job. Thank you for the tip Bryan 🙂 As always big thumbs up!

  8. I have had a CMMG 22 conversion kit for a few years. In my 16" 1/9 twist it shoots on par with my stock 10/22. In fact I shot an Appleseed with it and shot Rifleman. I think these are an essential piece of kit for a survival bag too. It will alow for food gathering that a high velocity 556/223 wouldn't. In my personal experience high velocity rounds are hard on grouse rabbit and other smaller game. I worked around the point of aim shift by putting a mark with a blue sharpie on my target turret for my conversion zero. Now I can be zeroed in seconds and have full faith. (Side note my Smith & Wesson M&P 22/15 magazines work perfectly with my CMMG conversion too )

  9. I suggest that you try shooting 22LR CCI Velocitor ammo. At 25 yards and even at longer ranges, If you take your time and do your end of the job, I think you will be very impressed. (40 grain, copper plated) And high cap mags should be tested with a full load for function. Nice video.

  10. My CMMG Kit works pretty well, it just needed a break in period to become reliable. Find the brand that works the best in your gun and stick with it. “Standard Velocity” rounds only. The only gripe I have is that the BCG won’t lock open on the last shot. At least on the one I have. (5 years old +/-)

  11. Brian,
Thank you for the review, I've had my eye on this kit for some time, too much time….. lol, the price has went up…. but I've got a couple of questions:
    1. Will you do a video on your AR setup?

    2. And I got poked fun of for asking this question on another channel, so I'll phrase it differently, how much difference is there in accuracy shooting the 22lr in your AR, with the gun being zeroed for 556???

    Thank you

    Kevin

  12. Great review Brian. Don't worry about your aim . Because with this conversion like you said you will be able to send more ammo down range at a cheaper cost ( more shots better aim ). I could use one these myself. Besides gun manufactures nowadays have so many platforms for .22 ( Who doesn't love shooting .22 )

  13. Bryan I started out with a conversion kit, but I didn't care for the wild discrepancies in bullet strike from 5.56 to 22lr(and having to adjust my sights). I purchased a barrel from CMMG that is designed to be used with that kit. I just built a dedicated upper and I am much happier with that set up. Much better accuracy with the dedicated upper with proper 22lr twist rate. and bore…..at least that was my experience.

  14. I have a feeling that if you were shooting for the dinner tonight ,your accuracy would improve quickly. Good on you for improving your marksmanship skills. I find we tend to flinch as we take up slack of trigger mechanism and in that micro moment, send it off course. Some shooters, as if by magic, never seem to miss, but it is through practice that they got that good. That balance test of knife rotation didn`t come over night either, that was many many trips back and forth. Take care, keep safe.

  15. who cares if you can shoot cheap if you don't hit what you are aiming at? the groups were horrible, you did not say the distance you were shooting in the video. I hate to be at the range with people that come there only to make noise. do the serious shooters a favor, buy some fireworks and stay at home.

  16. This is a timely video for me. Thought of buying one of these when I bought my AR, then just never got around to it. Kind of slipped my mind to be honest. Thanks for the reminder and great video as always.
